Hidden With Christ

"His [Jesus] followers also have a hidden life which people cannot fathom. Outwardly we appear to be the same people after Jesus has found and forgiven us as we were before. We have the same passport, nationality, and home. Our parents, husband or wife, children, brothers and sisters, relations and friends have not altered. We have the same colored skin, hair, and eyes. We are still tall or short, skinny or stout, good looking or plain, just as we were before. We even have the same basic temperament. Yet we are new, brand new people! Something has happened inside, which people cannot see. For now we are God's children, accepted and adopted into his family (1 John 3:1, 2). Now the Holy Spirit of God dwells within us (Romans 8:9). Now we have received a new life, eternal life (Romans 6:23; 1 John 5:12, 13), and this life is 'hidden with Christ'. Of course if it is really there, this new life will show itself in a variety of ways--in a new, humble confidence towards God, in a new serenity in the middle of storms of adversity, in a new (though still partial) self-control, and in a new love and compassion for people who are deprived and hurting in any way. Yet the life itself, of which these are outward signs, is hidden. We enjoy a hidden life with a hidden Christ. He himself 'is our life' (Colossians 3:10; RSV). If people do not understand us, it is Christ who is our secret." ~ John Stott, Life With Christ, pp. 75-76
